Abstract:Our goal is to build “self-assembled ionophores” that selectively bind ions and ion pairs. We hope to use these structures to catalyze ion transport in lipid membranes and in hydrogels. We have used non-covalent interactions to synthesize these supramolecular receptors from simple nucleoside analogs. Lipophilic guanosines form hydrogen-bonded structures based on the G4-quartet. These G4-quartets selectively bind cations and certain ion pairs. Our research goals include:
1) learn how to control structure and dynamics of nucleoside self-association and ion binding;
2) design self-assembled ionophores that selectively bind and transport cations across lipid membranes ;
3) build new functional supramolecular hydrogels.
