The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Nanjing University is one of the chemistry colleges and departments of university set up earliest in china. The Chemistry Department of Nanjing University traces early in 1920, and was later amalgamated by the Chemistry Department of the former Central University and the Chemistry Department of the former Jinling University. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Nanjing University was set up in 1996. After over 80 years of arduous construction, the school is now composed of the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, with a staff of 220, of which are 5 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Cheongkong professor, 6 winner of outstanding-young scientist foundation, 49 doctorate supervisors and 58 full professors. The school has a student body of over 1,400, of which are 800 undergraduate students and near 600 maser and Ph.D. candidates. 

    The school has four state key disciplines, and hosts the state key Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Mesoscopic Chemistry of Ministry of Education, 1 first-order chemistry discipline authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 5 Ph.D. programs, 6 master programs and 2 undergraduate programs. It has also the National Base for Training of Research and Teaching Personnel in Basic Sciences, the National 863 Program Advanced Material MO Precursors R&D Center of China, Surface and Interface Chemical Engineering and Technology Research Center of Jiangsu Province, the Institute of Coordination Chemistry, the Institute of Mesoscopic Solid State Chemistry, the Institute of Analytical Science, Institute of Applied Chemistry, the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, the Institute of Chemical Biology science, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Polymeric Materials and Engineering Research Center, and Separation Engineering Research Center of Nanjing University.

    The school has a dense learning atmosphere, the tradition of being rigorous in academic pursuit, and the steadfast work manner. A great number of students from all corns of the country have been taught in the past century and among the Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 39 once studied or worked here. In recent years the school has undertaken and completed a large number of major R & D programs at state level and has been crowned outstanding achievements in teaching, fundamental and applied researches. More than 70 awards have been won, including the National Award of Natural Sciences, the National Awards of Science and Technology Invention, the ministerial and provincial Awards for Advances in Science and Technology. The chemistry discipline of Nanjing University was ranked the second in mainland China on the basis of the state appraisement for first-order discipline given by the National Center for Degree and Graduate Student Education and Development in 2002.According to the report of ISI at the end of 2003, the school of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Nanjing University was ranked 34 worldwide and the first in mainland China in terms of the number of SCI papers published in the past 10 years by chemistry research institutes. Today the school is well-known far and wide and enjoys good reputation at home and abroad. It becomes one of the most attractive and competitive bases for personnel cultivation and scientific research in the country. 

    The school lays emphasis on extensive international cooperation and exchanges. It has hosted and sponsored the “25th International Congress on Coordination Chemistry” and a number of other conferences, symposiums and workshops on various topics. A few well-known scientists including the winner of Nobel Prize were invited to give lectures. Quite a few faculty members were invited to give plenary and keynote talks in the international conferences and symposiums. The school has established the constant relationship with a number of other renowned universities and institutes for academic exchange and collaboration. 

    The school is building itself by the early 21st century into an internationally influential school with characteristics of its own, one among the best in the world in teaching and research.
